STEREOSCOPIC 3D VIDEO CAMERA BUILT FOR USE IN SPACE

The European Recording Binocular 2 (ERB-2) is a stereoscopic 3D video camera built for use in space. It was built within just a year of its commissioning by the Human Space Flight and Operations Directorate of the European Space Agency (ESA). ESA contracted cosine in September 2008 to design ERB-2, after the positive results of its predecessor ERB-1 which had already been operating and functional on the ISS for two years. Whilst 3D imaging has been on the general public’s radar since Avatar exploded onto the big screen in 2009 depicting life on a fictional planet and space station, cosine had sent the first ERB up to the real Space Station back in 2006.

 

Currently the ERB-2 is on board of the International Space Station. EBR-2 is developed by cosine in collaboration with Techno Systems Developments (Naples, It) and Rob van Opdorp Designs (Amsterdam, NL).
